Finding Resources on the New Special Olympics (SOI) Website
Special Olympics' website has a new look. With the change, there has been a challenge in finding specific resources (such as winter sports rules, Article I, the summary of the changes in the recent sports rules, etc.). In addition, some of the links from your sites to specific areas may have been disabled in the conversion. SOI's website http://www.specialolympics.org/

SOI provided the following suggestions to find Sport resources on the new website:
• Use the “Find it Fast” button in the upper right corner of the home page.
• Click the “Coaching Guides” link.
• You will see a photo for each sport and then links to the Rules for that sport, the
Coaching Guide and the Quick Start Guide for that sport. (Some Winter sports rules

“fell off the wagon” during the migration – they are being replaced ASAP!)
• You might also use the list on the right side of this page to access these
   resources.

To find Article I, you can click on the Coaching Guide for a Sport; you will see a link at
the top of that page for Article I.

Bridgeport Police Department is No. 1 Again in 2008 - They have surpassed their own outstanding record this year—raising a grand total of $46,529.31!
On behalf of Special Olympics Connecticut, we would like to thank the Bridgeport police officers who put their heart into helping local Special Olympics Connecticut athletes again this year.

We also would like to thank the caring, generous people of Bridgeport and Fairfield County who responded to the officers’ fund-raising initiatives with an outpouring of warmth and wonderful support, to benefit Special Olympics Connecticut.

Dedicated officers recently conducted two Cop-on-Top fund-raisers to raise awareness and money for Special Olympics Connecticut. On December 15, they held a Cop-on-Top on Main Street, in front of the Merritt Canteen.

To raise awareness about Special Olympics Connecticut, Bridgeport police officers, donning Santa hats, were hoisted up in the air in a “lift” and collected donations in Christmas stockings from drivers passing by. These funds will help support year-round sports training programs and competitions for our athletes.

Officers on horses and the Bridgeport Mobile Command Center also helped to gain the attention and support of those driving by. At the end of the day, Bridgeport residents and those passing through town had given $9,286 to help Special Olympics Connecticut. The Merritt Canteen contributed to the event’s success with a venue and donation, and even the employees pooled some of their own money to make a contribution.

Officers repeated the event December 18 in front of Vazzy’s of Bridgeport where they debuted this event last year, with tremendous support from the Vazzy’s staff. This Cop-on-Top effort raised $6,293.

Officers who volunteered for the Cop-on-Top events include Capt. R. Gearing; Deputy Chiefs A. Radzimirski and J. Honis; and officers B. Bailey, W. Brooks, M. Burdo, T. Choothesa, F. D’Amore, M. Falbo, A. Figueroa, E. Garcia, B. Grabiniski, J. Grice, J. Holtz, J. Horesco, O. Jimenez, P. Kemeza, K. Kubel, A.J. Pastor, B. Pisanelli, and T. Rowlands.

Last year, the Bridgeport Police Department was honored as the top fund-raising police department for Special Olympics Connecticut. The department raised $30,000 with the community’s help — more money in a year than any other department in the history of Special Olympics Connecticut.

Lifetime Coaches Certification
Special Olympics Connecticut is now offering coaches with long-standing experience, a chance to apply for Lifetime Certification.  As many of you are aware, the Coaches
Education Program has been on the rise in the last two years in Connecticut.  In 2007, we offered a record breaking 18 coaches’ training schools; 12 different sports were offered as well as a CPR/First Aid class.  Over 200 coaches became certified and received their new credentials throughout the year.  In 2008, we offered another 18 coaches training schools certifying over 100 more coaches.

In order for one to apply for Lifetime Coaches Certification, a coach must be involved for at least 10 years and meet a few other requirements; the coach must then fill out the Lifetime Certification application as well as include a write-up answering all questions and adding any other pertinent information in regards to qualifications.

The application and write up will be reviewed and voted on by a group of seven volunteer coaches and sports directors which make up the Lifetime Certification Coaches Committee. Please allow 60 days for review to hear back from Special Olympics Connecticut regarding the status of your application.

Please read the application carefully and follow the specific instructions before sending
in.  Remember a coach must be involved for at least 10 years and meet a few other
requirements in order to be considered for Lifetime Certification so please be sure to
read carefully.  All completed applications can be sent to the address at the bottom of
the page. Please click here for the application. Thank you.

CAS Unified® Sports School Program

“THE PATHWAY”
UNIFIED® SPORTS FROM PRE-K THROUGH GRADE 12
By Beth Rasmussen, Young Athlete Program Director

The Young Athlete Program, the newest addition to the Unified® Sports Program now
in its second year in Connecticut, has enjoyed significant growth since its inception.  Prior to the introduction of the Young Athlete Program, children had to be 8 years old in order to participate in the Unified® Sports Program. We are thrilled to be able to welcome special needs children as well as their peers to the concept of inclusive play, through age appropriate gross motor skill activities, as early as age 3.

The Young Athlete Program enjoyed a successful first year piloting 9 programs throughout the state in Glastonbury (2 schools), Southington, Rocky Hill, Farmington, Enfield, North Stonington, Avon, and New Haven, with over 150 young athletes.

Halfway through its second year the Young Athlete Program has grown 10 fold from 150 to 1,500 children!  We have added programs in Waterford, Waterbury, Bridgeport, Milford, Hebron, and Marlborough!

The Young Athlete Program acts as the very first step into the Unified® Sports School
based programs available at the elementary, middle and high school levels.  Beginning at the Pre-K level we are witnessing the sheer joy of the children as they begin to form
strong bonds of friendship in this inclusive play environment.  It is our hope that these
bonds will continue to flourish and strengthen as the children move along “ThePathway” of the Unified® Sports Program, from Pre-K through Grade 12.

This flexible program is available to all Pre-Schools/Kindergarten and can be incorporated into the classroom as an enhancement to existing gross motor skill activities, or used as part of the Physical Education curriculum.

For more information, or to receive the FREE Young Athlete Guidebook and Activity Kit, please contact Beth Rasmussen by phone at 203.250.1111 or by e-mail at
brasmussen@casciac.org .
