Special Olympics Connecticut Celebrating 40 Years….
Happy Anniversary! – What is your Program doing to celebrate?
The e-newsletter has been recapping highlights in Special Olympics Connecticut history by giving you highlights of our days gone by and testing your knowledge of our history. Many of you have lived through much of our history and have your own stories to tell. If you have some remembrances of the earlier days of Special Olympics Connecticut – we’d like to hear them. Jot down your memories and mail them to Cathy Zaorski, Public Relations, in the Hamden Office or e-mail them to Cathy at cathyz@soct.org.
May Trivia Question
College campuses have hosted Special Olympics competitions since the beginning. Without their support we could not offer all the events that are available to our Special Olympics athletes. Not only in Connecticut, but across the country, colleges have been an instrumental part of the growth of Special Olympics.
Which one of these colleges has never hosted a World Summer Games?
College of Notre Dame
UCLA
LSU
Yale University
If you think you know the answer – email cathyz@soct.org. The first person to respond with the correct answer will receive a prize. Good luck!
April Special Olympics Connecticut Fun Facts
Did You Know?
When Special Olympics ran its first Games in 1969 athletes could choose from Track & Field events or Aquatic events. At the upcoming 2009 Summer Games athletes have 161 options for competing against their fellow athletes.
The first overnight stay took place in 1977 on the campus of Central Connecticut State College. It is estimated that 2,147athletes will call Southern Connecticut State University home for June 5, 6, & 7, 2009.
Wheelchair events first appeared at the Summer Games in 1979.
Of the 26 public and private institutions of higher education in Connecticut, practically every college has hosted a Special Olympics event at some time in our history. Many of you remember when the World came to Connecticut in 1995 and Yale University, Southern Connecticut State University, and Albertus Magnus College played host.
The first Summer Games in Connecticut took place at University of Connecticut with
approximately 800 athletes. At the 40th Anniversary Summer Games in June, more than 2,100 Athletes and Unified® Partners are expected to compete at Southern Connecticut State University campus and Hamden Hall Athletic Fields.

Eastern Region Honored

“President Michael Hogan of the University of Connecticut and his Special Olympic Club leaders.” From left to right: Ryan Matthews, Laura Harris, Eddie Boynton, Robert Puff (Student Director), President Michael Hogan, Katelyn Donovan (Student Director), and Meg Carley. We are very happy to have received the UCONN Community Partner award that was presented to Regional Director Marc Mercadante.
Special Olympics Connecticut Eastern Region was honored at the University of Connecticut (UCONN) Community Outreach end-of-year banquet with the Community Partner of the Year award. UCONN Community Outreach is run out of the Department of Student Services and has become an integral part of campus life for students attending UCONN at the undergrad and graduate level. In the 2008-2009 school year, over 2,000 students will have volunteered 50,000 community service hours for over 60 non-profits, schools, organizations, and causes.
UCONN volunteers have become a huge resource to the Eastern Region since our office moved to Norwich in 2004. We know some of the seniors who will be graduating soon so it was a time to thank them for their time and effort. In the 2008-2009 school year UCONN has sent a total of over 250 volunteers to our events including: the Chowderfest, 3 bowling qualifiers, CAS soccer, volleyball/basketball qualifiers, and 2 penguin plunges. They spear-headed the R-Word Campaign through campus e-mail and residence life staff , raised $4,500 through Dodging for Dollars, and have 170 volunteers registered for the UCONN Husky Classic soccer competition to be held on May 2nd at the Sherman Sports Complex at UCONN. Thank you UCONN!
Important News
Special Olympics Connecticut Public Health Update
Undoubtedly, you have read and/or heard stories about the spread of the swine flu
(Type AH1N1 influenza) to numerous countries, including the United States. While it is not known what the ultimate scope of the outbreak will be, it does pose a major challenge to countries, states, and communities, as well as organizations like Special Olympics. The purpose of this communication is to let you know the steps that Special Olympics, Inc. and Special Olympics Connecticut, Inc. (SOI and SOCT, respectively) are taking to monitor the situation and to help safeguard our employees, athletes, families, and volunteers who work with SOCT.
SOI has convened an Influenza Coordinating Committee to monitor the general population threat and specific threats to our constituents and staff. SOI will continuously monitor authoritative scientific and public health policy organizations as to emerging scientific information about the outbreak and their recommendations for disease prevention and management. This will provide a basis for recommendations that we would make to guide actions by SOI and SOCT, and to develop timely communications. SOI does have experience with addressing infectious disease challenges (e.g., Noro virus outbreak at the 2006 USA National Games and SARS epidemic in 2003). We have a business continuity plan that is intended to guide our actions in such situations.
Following is a set of questions and answers covering some of the most relevant points of the outbreak.
What is the nature of the swine flu infection?
Swine flu is caused by a virus (Type AH1N1) believed to be a mixture of swine, bird and human viruses.
How has the virus been transmitted?
Generally by infected people coughing or sneezing such that infectious droplets become airborne or are directly projected onto others. It is possible to become infected by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching facial areas where the infectious agent can enter. Initial cases appear to have come from Mexico and additional cases are suspected in numerous countries at various levels. The distribution of cases globally and by severity will likely continue to change for the foreseeable future.
How serious is the disease if one becomes infected?
That depends. In some individuals, the disease appears to be relatively mild with full
recovery 7-10 days after onset. In other individuals, it is much more severe and can
cause serious illness and even death, generally due to pulmonary shut down (lung failure from pneumonia).
How can disease transmission be prevented?
Right now, it’s important that you take everyday precautions:
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and throw the
tissue in the trash after you use it. If you don’t have a tissue, sneeze into the arm area
of your clothing.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze or touch surfaces that you suspect could be contaminated (e.g., hand holds on public transportation).Alcohol-based (50% alcohol) hand sanitizers are also effective. SOI will supply hand sanitizers in various areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, and conference rooms in SOCT’s offices.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way. One may also need to think about how liberal they are with handshakes and remember periodic hand washing.
• Most importantly, please stay home if you get sick, or if you need to care for your
dependent who gets sick. Contact a doctor if you have flu-like symptoms—fever, sore throat, aching muscles and/or joints, cough, stuffy or runny nose. SOCT has a sick leave policy to cover absences due to your illness, or if you need to stay home to care for a sick family member. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that if you get sick you should stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
• There is no vaccine currently developed to prevent this infection.
Pro Active steps we will be following to Guard SOCT’s Summer Games or Events from H1N1 Virus (Swine Flu)
• Coaches should NOT bring, to the Summer Games, any athlete who has symptoms. Residence Halls, like communal living, are easy places to spread viruses.
• Confer with and follow State of Connecticut Health Department about statewide
recommendations and actions that are happening in concern to H1N1 Virus
• Work with the event facility and follow their guidance and recommendations
• Provide coaches and volunteers health tips to prevent transmission of germs
• Post health tips and guidelines throughout event venues, housing facilities, rest rooms and cafeterias
• Provide extra pump soap and hand sanitizer and have it readily available in all public
areas
• Encourage all participants with flu-like symptoms to stay home or report to the medical facility immediately
• Assure everyone that we are taking all of the recommended steps of the State of
Connecticut Health Department and local health authorities.

Jail n’ Bails raise over $30,000 for Special Olympics Connecticut!
April was a great month for fundraising for the Law Enforcement Torch Run Program. On April 15th, Southern Connecticut State University’s Police Department hosted its 3rd Annual Jail n’ Bail. Over $13,000 was raised and the event was supported by students and faculty. Thanks to Sgt. Tom Madera and the Beta Mu Sigma Fraternity who organized this event. We also want to thank the Fairfield University Police Department and the Sacred Heart University Police Department for coming out to lend a hand! The more officers, the more arrests, the more money raised for Special Olympics Connecticut athletes.
The following week, it was Fairfield University’s turn. On April 22nd, over $17,000 was
raised! Although the weather did not cooperate and the event moved inside, the enthusiasm and excitement was not diminished! Thanks to Director of Public Safety, Todd Pelazza, Asst. Director, John Ritchie, and Sgt. Rob Didato the event was a huge success! We also want to thank officers from Southern Connecticut State University, Shelton, and Stratford for coming out to lend a hand as well as the Beta Mu Sigma Fraternity.

Summer Games 2009 – June 5, 6 & 7, Southern Connecticut State University and Hamden Hall Athletic Fields
We thank everyone for getting their registration materials in on time to the regional
offices. This is exceptionally helpful as we continue with our planning for the Summer
Games. Please join us for Opening Ceremonies at the Jess Dow Field at Southern Connecticut State University at 7:15 on Friday evening, June 5, as we celebrate Special Olympics Connecticut’s 40th Anniversary. Entertainment will feature the band Avenue Groove and the Taubl family from New Haven. The Taubl family made it to the finals on “America’s Got Talent” this year.
The theme for the victory dance will be “Flower Power” as we celebrate 1969 as the year that Special Olympics Connecticut was started.
Urban Youth Day
The 2009 Special Olympics Connecticut Urban Youth Day took place on April 7 at
the New Haven Athletic Center. This year’s event brought inner-city middle school students from all over Connecticut. Nearly 300 students participated in track & field and basketball events. Participants also had the opportunity to try out selected exhibition sports which included bowling, cycling and sailing. Two lucky winners, Marlissa Shaw and Justin Cross both from Roberto Clemente Academy in New Haven won bicycle helmets. In addition to the sporting events, students were able to enjoy Olympic Town and Healthy Athletes Village. The event concluded with a closing ceremony in which each student received a commemorative medal. A big thank you to our premier sponsor, Comcast , and the many wonderful volunteers who made this day possible. Yale students, who volunteered, organized by Tim Shriver, Jr. through the development of a new club on the Yale campus dedicated to supporting Special Olympics Connecticut athletes.

Lifetime Coaches Certification
Special Olympics Connecticut is now offering coaches with long-standing experience, a chance to apply for Lifetime Certification. As many of you are aware, the Coaches Education Program has been on the rise in the last two years in Connecticut. In 2007, we offered a record breaking 18 coaches’ training schools; 12 different sports were offered as well as a CPR/First Aid class. Over 200 coaches became certified and received their new credentials throughout the year. In 2008, we offered another 18 coaches training schools certifying over 100 more coaches.
In order for one to apply for Lifetime Coaches Certification, a coach must be involved for at least 10 years and meet a few other requirements; the coach must then fill out the Lifetime Certification application as well as include a write-up, answering all questions and adding any other pertinent information in regards to qualifications.
The application and write up will be reviewed and voted on by a group of seven
volunteer coaches and sports directors which make up the Lifetime Certification Coaches Committee. Please allow 60 days for review to hear back from Special Olympics Connecticut regarding the status of your application.
Please read the application carefully and follow the specific instructions before
sending in. Remember a coach must be involved for at least 10 years and meet a
few other requirements in order to be considered for Lifetime Certification so please
be sure to read carefully. All completed applications can be sent to the address at
the bottom of the page. Please click here for the application. Thank you.

CAS Unified® Sports School Program
“You Had To Be There!”
By Bob Deasy, Assistant Director, Unified® Sports
Please don’t feel insulted by my saying, “you had to be there”. But you had to be there.
“There” could have been any of our 11 Unified® Sports basketball tournaments in 12 days during our school based version of “March Madness.”
The bell was ringing in back of the basket. A Unified® Partner guiding an athlete, “a little more to the left…stop.” Once in position, the athlete’s hands left her walker and
she received the basketball. Now her hands were raised in a perfect grip on the basketball. The ball left her fingertips, a perfect arch, and “swish”. A common event on any basketball court except that this shooter is in part, visually impaired and playing on a Level 5 Unified® Sports Basketball team. You had to be there to see the smile on her face!
The pair gave new meaning to a common basketball term, “fast break” as they ran and wheeled down the basketball court during their Level 5 Unified® Sports Basketball game. Once down the court, the shooter, with the basketball firmly nestled in her lap, at the encouragement of the screaming crowd, slammed the ball through the tilted net. You had to be there to see the grin on her face!
He was led down the court by his Unified® Partner. It’s not easy for him as his gait was less than what you would normally see on a basketball court approaching the basket. Once before the basket, he knew what to do with the ball. It was not a slam dunk, but it was close! You had to be there to see his determination!
Sometimes she had to be coaxed to go in the right direction. Sometimes she needed the roar of the crowd to urge her on toward the basket. Once there, after looking around to see if you or anyone else was watching, she gently placed the basketball through the net. Then she clapped her hands. You had to be there to see her self-approval!
To me, Unified® Sports Level 5 basketball is the most fun to watch and enjoy. But, you have to be there to form your own opinion. See you there!
