Flag Football
A few issues ago we asked if anyone would be interested in participating in Flag Football, if it was offered as a sport. Thank you to those of you who responded. We are now looking at offering a clinic in October for any athletes and coaches who might like to be a part of this particular sport which is so popular in other states around the country. The event will be held on Sunday morning, October 4th.  Please contact Laurie-Jean at
laurie-jean@soct.org  or 203.230.1201 ext.235 if you are interested in learning more about this event.

Special Olympics Cheerleading Team
Come join the fast growing sport of All Star Cheerleading, at East Coast Sports, 285 State Street, North Haven. East Coast Sports, home of the U.S.A. Wildcats Cheer Team and gym owner Joanne Nelson welcome this exciting program along with two new staff coaches, Jessie Lynch and Florence Chittenden.

Jessie is a life-time resident of North Haven, who graduated in May from Southern
Connecticut State University with a degree in Special Education. She is a former
cheerleader at North Haven High and was captain in her senior year.

Florence, a Guilford resident, has dedicated her career to coaching Special Olympics
gymnastics programs in the state, regional, national and international level.

Jerry Nelson, co-owner of East Coast Sports and Head Women’s Gymnastics Coach at Southern Connecticut State University, joined forces with Florence in 1995 as co-commissioners of gymnastics for the Special Olympics Worlds Gymnastics Championships right here in New Haven.

Please come for the introductory classes offered on June 8 & 15 from 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. This will be the opportunity to meet our staff, do cheerleading, and to learn about our new Special Olympics Connecticut Cheerleading Team. No fee is required for these 2-days of fun. The official program will start on Mondays in July from 7:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. with a nominal fee.

If there are any other cheerleading programs in the state who might be interested in doing something similar, please have them contact Laurie-Jean. All Special Olympics Connecticut cheerleading competitions would be in conjunction with other official cheerleading competitions.

Eagle Scout Project
In an effort to help Special Olympics Connecticut go “green” we have an Eagle Scout
project designed by one of our athletes from Windsor.  Matt Glad has come up with the idea to recycle many of the medals that he has won over the years. To help support going “green” in helping preserve the environment he would like to ask if there are any medals that athletes and partners have received in past competitions that they would like to recycle. If you are interested in supporting this effort, you can donate your medals back to Special Olympics Connecticut by giving your medals to your Local Coordinator so that they can then turn them in to Special Olympics Connecticut at one of their meetings. Medals will be refurbished with a cleaning and new ribbons attached before they are reused.

CAS Unified® Sports School Program

It’s a Wonderful Life
At our recent CAS Annual Meeting, It’s a Wonderful Life was shown highlighting what really counts in life.  As I watched the images of children and young adults enjoying these simple pleasures, I couldn’t help but reflect on the many special opportunities our Unified® Sports athletes, partners, and staff have enjoyed this year. For example, during the fall soccer season an athlete in a wheelchair made a save in the goal for the first time in her life. In the winter an athlete who is legally blind scored a basket with the help of her Unified® Partner. At a recent Young Athlete Program culminating event a pre-school aged athlete carried the torch for his classmates to light the cauldron. These are just a few of the many life changing events that take place at our elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools throughout our state. Every time the whistle blows to start a Unified® Sports event wonderful things begin to occur.

The 6th Annual Michaels Cup Unified® Sports Banquet
At this year’s Michaels Cup Unified® Sports Banquet our middle school and high school students were honored for their essays.  In each essay, the underlining theme was how their experience had helped them to change attitudes and change lives.

Matt Dinello, a student at the John F. Kennedy Middle School in Southington, earned top honors among his middle school colleagues with his description of making the choice between opening day of baseball or participating in his Unified® Sports team practice.

Marney Pollack, a junior from Farmington High School, highlighted her experiences these past three years as she read her essay. In addition to her dedication to Unified® Sports, Marney is an accomplished singer, theatrical performer, and scholar. Her most rewarding experience, however, is enriching and encouraging the lives of her Unified® Sports friends and the impact these athletes have had on her.

We also recognized Ann Malafronte for her 13 years of dedicated service as Director of the Unified® Sports Program. In honor and recognition of Ann and of her fine work, the Ann Malafronte Rookie School of the Year Award was established. Congratulations to this year’s recipient, Southington High School!

The top middle schools recognized at this year’s Michaels Cup Banquet were:
Broadview Middle School
, Danbury
Irving Robbins Middle School, Farmington
Henry James Middle School, Simsbury
Moran Middle School, Wallingford
Chippens Hill Middle School, Bristol

The top high schools recognized at this year’s Michaels Cup Banquet were:
Bristol Central High School, Bristol
Berlin High School, Berlin
Farmington High School, Farmington
Bacon Academy, Colchester
Branford High School, Branford

The Be a Fan Awards were awarded to Alexa Kovlakas, for recruiting the Orange Avenue Elementary School, and Lori Bauchiero, for her efforts in encouraging all of the Southington schools grades Pre-K through 12 to establish a Unified® Sports team. We also recognized Bob Nugent, owner of the Woodlawn Bowling Lanes for hosting, at no cost, the middle school and high school bowling tournaments for the past 5 years.

The Friends of Unified® Sports awards were presented to: Peter Baker, of Crystal Rock Water Company, for his generous donations over the years, Ruth Hewston was recognized for her support in our volleyball tournaments for the past 8 years, and Betty Remigino-Knapp for hosting high school basketball tournaments and elementary sports day for the past 10 years.

At the conclusion of this year’s banquet Kevin Nathan shared an emotional closing, as he stated that, the students, coaches, and families “get it”. “Through the sincere concern for others, lives are changed”. He went on to say that there is no better sport in the state of Connecticut, which brings out the best in all involved, than Unified® Sports.

On behalf of the Unified® Sports Staff, I extend to all members of our Unified® Sports
family a heartfelt thank you for another successful year and hope you enjoy a restful
summer vacation. See you in September!
