Feature Story

Eunice Kennedy Shriver Website
Special Olympics is pleased to inform you about the the Eunice Kennedy Shriver website, launched on July 20th, in celebration of Special Olympics’ 41st anniversary. The launch of the site provides an amazing opportunity to use the power of the internet to communicate a very special message of thanks to our founder. Please help us spread the word to every athlete, family member, volunteer and friend about the new site,
www.eunicekennedyshriver.org , and ask them to post their personal tribute to Mrs. Shriver as a wonderful way of celebrating this special day.

40 years old but not feeling our age
It’s August already and our Anniversary year is half over with much more to come! We hope you are enjoying all that Special Olympics Connecticut has to offer you this year. So much has happened and there is a lot in the works still to come. Our next big event, Dream Ride 2009, is happening on Sunday, August 23, 2009.

Just think about how much has occurred since our 30th Anniversary. Summer Games were held at Fairfield & Sacred Heart Universities and our motto was “Training for Life”.  In the news we read about the shootings at Columbine High and the crash of JFK Jr.’s airplane. At home we ended a hard day of training watching NYPD Blue, Mad About You, or The Sopranos. With our teammates we went to the movies and got scared watching The 6th Sense or Blair Witch Project. As sports fans we saw David Cone pitch a no-hitter for the New York Yankees and rooted for the UCONN Huskies over the Duke Blue Devils in the NCAA Basketball finals. We paid .33 for a postage stamp and $1.15 for a gallon of gas.

Just imagine what life will be like in 10 more years. Fortunately, we all have a say in
where Special Olympics Connecticut is headed, based on our participation and support of our athletes.

Many of you have lived through much of our history and have your own stories to tell. If you have some remembrances of the earlier days of Special Olympics Connecticut, we’d like to hear them. Please jot down your memories and mail them to Cathy Zaorski in the Hamden Office or e-mail them to her at cathyz@soct.org.

40th Anniversary Trivia
Last month’s trivia contest was about the celebrity softball games that took place at the Yale Baseball Field.  Dubbed Love 91, Love 92, etc., the event brought together celebrities from Hollywood, the sporting world and national news programs.  We were looking for the name of the celebrity host for those events and Don Imus was the name we were looking for. Geanne Murphy e-mailed in that Imus was sick that year and the Rob Bartlett took over for him. Quite a memory!!

Please keep past trivia question winner George in your thoughts and prayers as he is
serving us at Camp Bucca in Iraq.  We wish George and his fellow servicemen all the best and a safe return home. Thank you George for your service to your country!

August Trivia Question
In keeping with the celebrity theme, name the Special Olympics Connecticut athlete who regularly appeared as a correspondent on WTNH and who was nominated for an Emmy for the work?

If you think you know the answer, e-mail cathyz@soct.org. The first person with the correct answer will receive a prize pack.  Good luck!
