Feature Story

"We have lost a great visionary and tireless worker whose sole purpose was to have people with intellectual disabilities be accepted across the world. We are very privileged to have witnessed Eunice Kennedy Shriver's energy and leadership in Connecticut many times in our organization's 40 years. Special Olympics Connecticut would not be where we are today without the perseverance and foresight of this amazing woman. Our prayers are with Sargent Shriver, her children, grandchildren and the rest of her family in this sorrowful time."

- Statement issued from Beau Doherty, Special Olympics Connecticut President
      August 11, 2009

Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the Founder and Honorary Chairman of Special Olympics, passed away last month at Cape Cod Hospital (Massachusetts), surrounded by her family. The reverence we all hold for Mrs. Shriver is difficult to articulate, yet "gratitude" may be the sentiment we're hearing and feeling the most, gratitude for creating and championing something so extraordinary as to profoundly affect countless lives, for more than four decades.

She forever altered the course of mankind by leading a human rights movement to bring dignity, respect, opportunity, and hope to people with intellectual disabilities, throughout the world. Her gift was that she invited all of us to come and stand with her, on the right side of history.

We encourage you to visit the tribute site that was established in her honor, www.eunicekennedyshriver.org. Please visit the site and post your own tribute to Mrs. Shriver and share your condolences and sentiments regarding the impact of her life and work.

Mrs. Shriver believed that there was always more to be done. Your continued support of Special Olympics will honor her life and continue her legacy. Thank you.

Special Olympics Connecticut Memorial Mass

On Saturday, August 22nd, Special Olympics Connecticut held a Memorial Mass for Mrs. Shriver at the Church of Saint Mary's in New Haven. The service was a lovely tribute to Mrs. Shriver and would not have been possible without our friends from the Knight's of Columbus, especially Bob Goossens.

Thank you also to:

Special Olympics Connecticut Celebrates 40 Years
We continue to celebrate 40 years of changing attitudes and changing lives and we are proud to forge ahead in honor of our late founder, Eunice Kennedy Shriver. While it has been so much fun to look back over the decades and to remember how far we have come, it is also a time to move ahead and keep growing and improving our programs. We are all honored to continue Mrs. Shriver's vision and goals.

Also, in case you haven't seen it, please click here to view the Special Olympics Connecticut 40th Anniversary video.

40th Anniversary Trivia
Last month's trivia contest question was about a Special Olympics Connecticut Emmy nominee.  We were looking for the name of the Special Olympics Connecticut Athlete who regularly appeared as a correspondent on WTNH and who was nominated for an Emmy for the work. Congratulations to Sue Clayton, a Seaside Saybrook Local Coordinator, for being the first to respond with the correct answer which was: Jamie Lazaroff!

September Trivia Question
At the first Special Olympics competition on July 20, 1968 who said to Eunice Kennedy Shriver "You know, Eunice, the world will never be the same after this."?

The first person to respond, via e-mail, with the correct answer will win a prize. If you think you have the winning answer, please e-mail Laura Gremelsbacker at LauraG@soct.org by September 25th. Good luck!

Dream Ride 2009

Dream Ride 2009 Drives in $165,000

Dream Ride 2009, held on, Sunday, August 23, 2009 with a final destination of the Farmington Club. The goal of the event was to raise money for Special Olympics Connecticut’s programs. By days end, Michael Bozzuto, President and CEO of Bozzuto’s & the Hometown Foundation, presented a $165,000 check to Special Olympics Connecticut’s President, Beau Doherty. This brings the 9-year total to approximately $965,000 for Special Olympics Connecticut’s programs.

Motorcycle riders from across the state as well as New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine took part in the ride and enjoyed Connecticut’s scenery. Seventy Special Olympics Connecticut athletes lead the Dream Ride 2009, riding in limo vans, along the route through Farmington.

Dream Ride began 9 years ago because Adam Bozzuto, who founded Bozzuto's, Inc. in 1945, had a dream of building a training facility in Connecticut for Special Olympics Connecticut athletes. Michael Bozzuto, his son and current Chairman, President and CEO, organizes Dream Ride as a way to achieve this vision.

SO-LE Special Olympics Law Enforcement Fall Classic, Hosted by CrossFit Cheshire
What is CrossFit? CrossFit is extreme, intense cross-training that can be done with basic gym equipment in a group or alone. It is the latest progression in fitness training and the program has exploded into the mainstream. It has been used for several years in law enforcement, firefighting, and military circles. The regimens are short and brutal, replacing ordinary weight lifting and steady-state aerobic training with mixed-up, amped-up, double-espresso workouts!

Special Olympics Law Enforcement is teaming up with CrossFit USA of Cheshire to host a fundraising event on September 20th from 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 pm. The event is open to anyone who pays the registration fee of $30.00. Different events will be set up in different categories and awards will be given to the winners.

The three scheduled events are:
1) Tag Team "300" event: 100 Thrusters (95 lbs. for men / 65 lbs. for women), followed by 100 pull-ups, concluding with 100 box jumps. This is a "tag team" event in which each competitor alternates through the exercises, "tagging" his or her partner when they opt to rest.

2) 2,000 meter row on a C-2 Rower (individual event)

3) Individual "300" event:  3 rounds of 5 exercises, with a one minute rest in between each round.  The 5 exercises consist of 20 Wall Balls (20 lb. ball for men, 10 lb. ball for women), 20 Sumo Dead Lift High Pulls (75 lbs. for men, 45 lbs. for women), 20 Box Jumps, 20 Push Presses (75 lbs. for men, 45 lbs. for women), and 20 Air Squats.

There will be two divisions:  one for "Law Enforcement", and the other "Open".  Within each division, there will be a separate trophy for the top Male and the top Female finishers.

Rules and exercise demonstration /protocol will be explained before each event.  Demos of all the exercises may be found at the CrossFit website,
www.crossfit.com, under the Demo section.

If you register on-line, you will receive a free t-shirt; look for that website to come in the next newsletter. You can also register in person the day of the event between Noon and 12:30 p.m.; however, you will not receive a competition t-shirt.  Competition t-shirts will be sold for $20, and snacks and beverages will be available for purchase.

Are you ready to take the plunge?
The 1st Annual Coventry Lake Penguin Plunge at Patriots Park will be held on December 5, 2009. This event is being hosted by the Coventry Police Department and the ECSU Police Department. Patriots Park is a wonderful venue with great facilities, including a sandy beach, a beautiful lake, and a large playground for kids! There will food, music, and maybe a visit from Old St. Nick!

Any money you raise will be credited to your department in 2009, a great way to add some extra dollars to your fundraising totals.

To register and start raising money, please click on the following link, http://soct.convio.net/Coventry .

Southwest Law Enforcement Torch Run Events
Fairfield Police,
with an outpouring of support from friends representing the fire department, animal control, Fairfield University’s Public Safety Department, and local businesses, surpassed their goal of raising $5,000 for Special Olympics Connecticut by holding a Cop-On-Top fundraiser on Saturday, August 8th. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of the Fairfield community who made donations to support the officers’ efforts, $6,538.00 in contributions was collected, according to event organizer,
Fairfield Sgt. James Perez.

Officer Anthony Krushinski was the volunteer Cop-On-Top for this first-time fundraiser that challenged a member of the police department to go up on a rooftop to raise awareness and funding for Special Olympics Connecticut.

Officer Krushinski was lifted up, via the firemen’s ladder truck, to the rooftop of the retail building at the corner of the Post Road and Reef Road. He remained there for over 6 hours, demonstrating endurance and a few dance moves, too. Krushinski, in full uniform, called out to the drivers and pedestrians below with a megaphone, asking them to make a donation to Special Olympics Connecticut, so the lofty goal would be met and he could return to ground level. Additional police officers, Fairfield University Safety Officers, and members of the Fairfield Police Explorers Club hit the streets, asking those stopped at the busy intersection to offer donations as well.

At the Sherman Green, Al G. & the Vinman DJ Entertainment delighted a crowd with music and games, and The Analog Kids, featuring Fairfield Officer Mark Letsch on drums, performed.  Fairfield University’s Todd Pelazza cooked hot dogs and cheeseburgers, donated for the event. Proceeds of items including kettle corn, ice cream, and cold beverages, also went to supporting Special Olympics Connecticut.

One particularly memorable and touching moment was when Tony Broadhurst, a long-time Special Olympics Connecticut athlete and Fairfield resident, presented two of the gold medals he had won in Special Olympics Connecticut competitions to the Fairfield police to thank them for holding the fundraiser.

Thanks also to Greenwich Police officers for hosting a Tip-A-Cop event at Two Doors Restaurant.
