Gabriella (Gabby) Algiere, Communications Intern
Algiere spent her summer writing feature articles and media alerts for SOCT. Additionally, she took photos at the developmental swimming competition at this year’s Summer Games. Algiere has a personal connection to SOCT; her neighbor has been an SOCT athlete for years. Algiere has witnessed her friend participate and grow through involvement with Special Olympics, so deciding to intern with the organization was a “no-brainer.” Her position as a communications intern allowed her to connect with the athletes and reinforced her passion to pursue a career in communications
“Getting to know the athletes better and sharing their stories is super interesting to me,” said Algiere.
Conlan Bremer, Communications Intern
Bremer's internship focused on public relations efforts. Bremer worked alongside Unified Sports ® coaches, wrote speeches, and composed press releases, media alerts and social media toolkits. Not only did Bremer gain industry skills by working with SOCT, he also learned how to support people of all abilities. Bremer said the highlight of his internship was connecting with athletes and coaches at the Summer Games and witnessing the support of the SOCT community.
“Being able to give back to my community, whether that be at the state level or even my own hometown, is its own reward,” said Bremer.
David Johnson, Marketing Intern
Johnson worked on photography projects — editing and organizing — as well as assisting with data entry for Healthy Athletes®. Johnson learned about the SOCT internship through his school, Hopkins School, which had posted the job. Johnson hopes to pursue photography as a career one day, so the internship at SOCT felt like the perfect opportunity to enter the field. Johnson volunteered at last year’s Summer Games, helping at the cycling competition. Johnson's internship provided insight into the internal operations for events like Summer Games, as well as year-round fundraising efforts and event planning. Johnson’s experience working with photos has confirmed that this is still the career path he wants to pursue.
Emma Neary, Special Events Intern
Neary focused on event planning, creating marketing materials, researching potential sponsors, connecting with businesses and assisting in communications. Neary chose SOCT to gain experience in nonprofit event planning. This summer, Neary gained confidence to network with sponsors, manage multiple projects at a time and become more independent. Neary worked with the team that planned Over the Edge, which exposed her to different parts of nonprofit event-planning all at once.
“I'm really grateful for the experience and everything I’ve learned during my internship,” said Neary. “It’s been a great opportunity to grow professionally while supporting an organization with such an important mission.
Mia Sansone, Public Relations and Communications Intern
Sansone spent her internship writing feature articles, social media copy and press releases. She interned with SOCT last summer and decided to return because of the impact the organization had on her. Through her internship, she learned the skills necessary to ensure clear communication between a nonprofit and its audience. Sansone has also gained a community through this experience, making connections with athletes and other SOCT staff.
“Writing articles about the people who are involved in Special Olympics has allowed me to connect with them,” said Sansone. “I love being able to share their stories with the rest of the SOCT community.”
