By: Angie D'Amico, SOCT's Assistant, Health and Wellness and Jenn LeFebre, Adaptive Personal Trainer at Special Strong Central
Whether training to improve sports performance or stay active year-round, Special Strong Central CT provides a welcoming environment where athletes can get stronger and reach their goals.
An interview with Jenn LeFebre, Adaptive Personal Trainer at Special Strong training in Cheshire and Angie D'Amico, SOCT's Assistant, Health and Wellness.
What are the benefits of Special Strong?
Jenn: The benefits are different for every person because every person comes to us with different strengths and different goals. From a fitness standpoint, we can work on strength, endurance, balance, coordination, mobility, and body awareness. But something I see develop right alongside those physical skills is confidence. Seeing athletes realizing, “I can do this.” For Special Olympics athletes, we can also make training specific to their athletic goals, and we can have fun doing it. We adapt the workout so the athlete has the opportunity to participate, be challenged, and succeed. Inclusion doesn’t mean making things easier. It means making sure everyone has a meaningful opportunity to be part of it.
What do you like about Special Strong?
Angie: I love working out with a personal trainer because it helps me learn how to do different exercises, using different weights, and new equipment. I also like this program because it helps me with nutrition and my goal of running the Law Enforcement Torch run again. I am working on my balance and stability.
How does this impact your ability to work out?
Angie: Special Strong helps me be more excited to work out with my trainer, whom I see twice a week. SS helps me build muscle and be more concentrated when I am working out. When I was doing this by myself, I didn’t have the confidence that I do now when I am in the gym with my personal trainer, Jenn.
