Our highly anticipated annual Summer Games presented by Pratt & Whitney, an RTX business, brought together extraordinary athletes, coaches, officers, volunteers, sponsors and family members and friends for a weekend-long celebration of athleticism and inclusion. With more than 2,000 participants in the Games, and more than 30 sponsoring companies and organizations, it was truly about teamwork and celebration.
Athletes fought through the heat and rose to the challenge of competing in cycling, swimming, soccer, track & field and tennis at Southern Connecticut State University, Hamden Hall Beckerman Athletic Center and Yale West Campus, June 5th through 7th. Olympic Town, with its games and activities run by the Knights of Columbus, and Saturday night's Victory Dance with its "at the beach" theme rounded out the weekend and gave athletes opportunities to socialize and have fun. Preceding the Games was a thrilling Opening Ceremony, emceed by NBC Connecticut's Ryan Hanrahan, that featured the traditional Parade of Athletes, skydivers, artistic dancers and the Final Leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run and lighting of the cauldron.
One of the most impactful offerings during Summer Games was our Healthy Athletes® Village and Health activities including yoga. Featured health disciplines experienced by more than 200 athletes each included Health Promotion, concentrating on self-care and Strong Minds, focusing on emotional well-being. At Opening Eyes, athletes had their eyesight checked and, if needed, received free prescription eyeglasses.
Leading up to Summer Games, to boost awareness of our athletes' talents and triumphs, the three-day Law Enforcement Torch Run took place, June 3rd - 5th. The Torch Run engaged officers statewide, as well as athletes in some communities. Passing the Torch from town to town, the officers carried with them a message of hope and an example of perseverance. Torch Run Rallies were hosted by Foxwoods Resort Casino and the West Hartford Police Department. "Adopt-A-Mile" signs officers sold to fundraise lined their routes and so did cheering neighbors as they passed by.
