Kevin Fitzgerald

Naugatuck, CT

Kevin Fitzgerald is a Unified Sports® coach from Naugatuck who is going to the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games as a Floating Coach for the Connecticut delegation. Kevin has been involved in Special Olympics for 28 years. 

He first participated as a volunteer and then became a Unified Sports® partner, Assistant Coach, and Head Coach. Kevin was also the Local Coordinator for the Special Olympics Hamden Local Program for 11 years. He is currently a member of the Games Committee for Special Olympics Connecticut’s state competitions. He is Co-Director of floorball at Winter Games and supports the softball tournament during the Unified Sports® Fall Festival as well as competition at Summer Games. Kevin has also participated in and supported many fundraisers benefiting Special Olympics over the years. 

He won the Special Olympics Connecticut Unsung Heroes Award in 2009 and the Sheila Schmidt Award for Volunteerism in 2025. He also received an Employee Recognition Award from the Connecticut Department of Developmental Services for his work with individuals with intellectual disabilities. 

Kevin retired after working with individuals with disabilities for 35 years. He now enjoys spending time in nature and with his family and friends. He is the proud grandfather of two wonderful grandchildren. 

Kevin admires the volunteers that come out and help at Special Olympics events the most because they offer a lot of their time, enthusiasm, and energy. “Special Olympics is a volunteer-driven organization and to see the hundreds of volunteers who come out to help, often with no pre-planned idea of what they can do, is truly amazing,” he says. 

Kevin has always wanted to attend a USA Games, but he always had too much on his plate to go. When he was given the chance to go to the 2026 USA Games, Kevin immediately jumped at the opportunity. He is attending practices and helping the athletes train for the Games.
