Meet Darryl “DJ” Green, Jr., an athlete from Bristol who will represent Connecticut and compete in track and field at the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games. DJ is 27 years old and got involved in Special Olympics in 2018. He’s participated in bowling and cross-country skiing in addition to track and field. He recently became a Global Messenger - an athlete who serves as a spokesperson and ambassador for Special Olympics Connecticut.
DJ credits Special Olympics for helping him become a lot more active and make many friends. “It has pushed me to become a better version of me,” says DJ.

DJ’s biggest obstacle has been running long distances, especially since he’s had to overcome some health challenges. He never thought that he could run as well as he does now and is proud of all he’s achieved as a runner! He’s even completed a half marathon!

DJ works at Imagine Nation Preschool as a substitute teacher. In addition to participating in Special Olympics, he enjoys watching wrestling and drawing and designing pictures. He’s also tap danced for ten years.
DJ admires his best friend Dylan since he always helps him and cheers him on. Dylan runs with DJ every week and is always there to help him reach his goals. “He helps me push myself and reach goals I’ve never thought I could reach,” says DJ.

Going to the USA Games means the world to him, as he feels that all his hard work is paying off. He looks forward to meeting new friends and competing. To prepare, DJ runs every week around his neighborhood. He also goes to the local gym with friends a few times a week and trains with his coach every weekend.
