Frederick "Freddie" Blum

Unified Basketball Athlete

Oxford, CT

Meet Frederick “Freddie” Blum, an athlete who’s a member of the Unified Sports® basketball team from Oxford High School going to the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games. Freddie is 18 years old and has been involved in Special Olympics for four years. He’s participated in basketball, cornhole, flag football, kickball, and soccer.

Freddie says Special Olympics has become a huge part of his life. “It has changed my life by (giving me the chance to make) great friendships that will last forever,” says Freddie.

He is most proud of being the leader of multiple clubs and teams at his school. Freddie is a Youth Ambassador for Special Olympics, the Captain of his Unified Sports® team, and a Best Buddies Officer. He is also a member of Oxford High School’s golf team.

Freddie admires his coach and mentor, Jennifer LaCapra, the most because she’s always been there for him from the first day he joined Unified Sports® and helps him get involved in other Special Olympics events.

Freddie is very excited to go to his first USA Games in 2026. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity that I am very grateful for,” says Freddie. He looks forward to coming together with athletes from across the United States as well as learning from other student leaders and athletes.

To prepare for the Games, he is practicing with his Unified Sports® teammates and getting in touch with local Special Olympics leaders to learn about volunteer opportunities.
