Gabriel "Gabe" Hernandez

Unified Basketball Athlete

Oxford, CT

Eighteen-year-old Gabriel "Gabe" Hernandez is a member of the Unified Sports® basketball team at Oxford High School going to the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games. He has been involved in Special Olympics Unified Sports® as an athlete since he started high school. "It makes me feel included whenever we play a sport. It also changed me as a person," says Gabe.

Gabe says that his biggest challenge has been staying mentally focused throughout the years. He’s proud of winning a cornhole tournament and the state basketball championship with his teammates and enjoys “being around everyone and seeing their smiles.”

In addition to Unified Sports®, Gabe plays video games and has participated in a community band.

Gabe admires his Unified Sports® coach, Jennifer LaCapra, who encouraged him to join the Unified Sports® team and his mother for supporting him through the years.

Gabe is looking forward to going to Minneapolis - and to enjoying great food and bonding with his teammates during the once-in-a-lifetime experience. He is mentally preparing for the long trip as well as training for basketball. This is Gabe's first time participating in the USA Games and he is very glad to have the opportunity!
